Virgin Media attracts another 28,600 customers

Richard Branson’s cable operator Virgin Media has added a better-than-expected 28,600 more cable users in the fourth quarter despite the downturn.

Although uptake of Virgin Media is still a way behind BSkyB, which added 482,000 customers in the last quarter, revenues topped £980 million.

England 2018 signs Morrisons as a sponsor

England 2018, the team leading England’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup, has signed Morrisons as a sponsor.

The supermarket becomes the bid team’s third partner. As part of the sponsorship, Morrisons says it will launch a campaign on 8 March in its stores to collect more than two million customer signatures.

Retailers still struggling with social media as a marketing tool

socialThe majority of UK retailers are failing to exploit the opportunity to integrate social media as a means to increase sales and generate loyalty, according to a new study from dotCommerce.

The ecommerce solutions company reveals that while 42% of retailers have some kind of social media presence, just 12% are using more than one social media channel and only 32% of retailers with a Twitter or Facebook account promote these on their website.

Diageo, owner of the Guinness and Smirnoff brands, has hailed its focussed marketing spend as it reports an increase in sales.

The drinks maker says net sales in Britain grew 5% in the six months to 31 December, while global sales increased to £6.9bn from £6.7bn a year earlier.

Rightmove sees surge in home advertising

Rightmove, Britain’s biggest property search website, restored some confidence to the housing market today by saying it had seen a surge in the amount each estate agent was spending on home adverts in January.

It said that this, in turn, made it confident that its 2010 profits would beat forecasts. “Trading in January 2010 saw a substantial increase in average spend per advertiser,” it said.
