There are estimated to be about 48,000 people in the UK working in Public Relations. The industry is growing in Britain, and thus graduate PR jobs are extremely sought after. In fact, it is always in the top three of graduate career choices. There is no set way of finding employment in PR, but there are certain routes of PR training that could lead you to the right PR job. PR Graduates
Whilst it has not always been completely necessary to have a qualification specifically in PR, it is increasingly helpful in many applications due to the thriving nature of the industry in recent years. As PR continues to grow, competition and standards rise. Therefore, PR graduates can be given priority over those who have little or no experience in the field. PR training at university degree level ensures that candidates are given skills and knowledge specific to Public Relations in order to be able to jump into graduate PR jobs with a head start. A recent survey shows that 77% of PR graduates find PR work within 6 months of graduating.
Work Experience
PR training in a work experience placement is extremely valuable for future prospects. Potential employers will be shown that you are fully committed to the industry and will have the reassurance that you have first hand experience of how PR works. Gaining experience from any type of communications organisation (such as Pr consultancies, design companies, marketing departments) looks great on your CV whether it is paid, unpaid, full time or part time.
A good way into placements like these is to approach charities that are underfunded. These are usually good places to start as they could do with free extra help. The placement works in both parties’ favour.
There are press and PR directories that can be bought, but these are normally very expensive. Check with local career centres, your university or libraries to borrow copies. Look in these and ask a number of companies for a placement.
Graduate Schemes
Many larger companies offer graduate schemes that are specifically designed for those leaving university. These schemes are highly competitive and will normally need to be applied for well in advance. Consultancies will have one or two entry dates per year, and if successful it could be a way into the company.
With any of the above entry methods, persistency is the key. Graduate PR jobs are not the easiest of vacancies, but through constant persistence and keeping your options open, it is possible to find the right work for you.
