Your CV is the first contact and impression a prospective employer will have of you, and first impressions count. Employers and recruitment companies are typically receiving more CV's than ever before, and spend less than a minute actually reading a CV, therefore it is vital that the first impression is positive and the right impact is made.
Unfortunately this is not always the case. In 7 years of working in recruitment, I have read literally thousands of CVs, many of which have had basic mistakes which probably meant that that person was not successful in securing their next position. Here are some of the most common mistakes that people have made.
Spelling mistakes - it is an absolute sin to have any spelling mistakes. Check, re-check, and check again before sending it out.
Applying for the wrong job - people have emailed CVs and covering letters applying for one job, yet the covering letter is addressed to a different person, different company and for a different job all together!
Incorrect dates of employment - in many CVs the dates of employment just do not add up. The dates may overlap and conflict with each other.
Too fancy - unnecessary use of colours, photographs, logos or fancy paper does not aid an application. Where most CVs are received by email, this can cause more frustration as it may take longer to load and more difficult to save in databases. Keep it simple.
Making it too long - in many CVs, the person has just kept adding and adding information too it, making it far too long. A CV should be kept to 2-3 pages of relevant information that is easy and clear to read.
Not enough information - CVs that only give basic information will be uninspiring and not grab the interest of the recruiter / employer.
Irrelevant information - listing information that is not relevant or of interest to the position being applied for does not add any value to the CV. For example if you are 40 years old, do not still include details of holiday jobs held when you were 16!
Disorganised - many CVs are not well organised as the information is scattered around the page and does not flow in a logical order.
No contact details - I have received many CVs with no telephone numbers, email addresses or postal addresses! Even with the best CV in the world, with out any contact details it will be impossible to invite you for an interview.
Gaps in CV - CVs should tell a story of what you have done and when you did it. Any gaps in dates can send alarm bells ringing to the recruiter / employer.
