As the Data & Analytics Manager for a financial services organisation, you will be leading a small team analysts (insight and reporting specialists) in support of the delivery of operational analytics, visualisation and reporting services to the business.
The company provides financing services to a mix of consumers and businesses across the UK. They're one of the largest players in this market because of the diversity of brands they represent. Each brand is globally recognised, but the principal focus of your role here will be to support just the UK operations, and UK customers too. It's an operation of around 1,000, but they've been growing quickly, tripling their workforce in recent years!
The business is embarking of a programme of investment into their data and analytics divisions, looking to hire at all levels as their aim is to raise the profile of data within the business, and how it supports decision making with actionable insight. This is where you come in…
As the Analytics Manager, you will be responsible for taking control of a team of 5 reports, as well as lead on large, complex projects, all stakeholder engagement and dealing with complex analytics projects, including some aspects where you will remain hands-on with the analysis work. But this will only be around 20-25% of your focus.
The rest, and core focus, of your time will be in raising the strategic game of how data plays an ever-more integral part in supporting the company in its decision making. So this will be both with a stakeholder group of around 450, right up to and including board members, as well as supporting your team to ensure what they're focusing on really adds value, managing priorities and pushing back with the business where it's appropriate and you know what's being requested may not be the best use of your team's time.
Initially the business and its stakeholders need to be taken on a bit of a journey, switching on to what good quality data and insights can do for them. This will mean lots of adhoc analysis projects whilst repeatable and automated solutions can be established (your team will be looking at this as a priority). As well as meeting the intention of the business to move into more strategic and advanced analysis approaches, including things like forecasting, predictive modelling, etc.
On top of this, you will also be responsible for reviewing the tools you and your team will be utilising to provide actionable insight, improving reporting capabilities with things like self-service functionality and visualisation techniques. Currently the business has Business Objects and Tableau in place, but it's your call to establish the business cases for change where new technologies can really add value and raise the profile of 'insight' and data led decision making within the business.
This is a really exciting opportunity for someone who's driven, motivated and keen to go into a business which is by far the finished article, but is putting the budget, manpower and ambition behind achieving this step-change to data centricity. So there's plenty of quick-wins to be had, along with the longer term, more complex projects to deliver too which look good on anyone's CV.
