As the Head of Data & Analytics, you will be leading the strategy and development plans for the data division behind a hugely innovative digital innovation hub which sits at the centre of a major multi-brand consumer retail organisation.

This is a business within its own right, it's a 'digital garage' with a mission to take emerging and disruptive digital technology and create innovative solutions which act as both stand-alone propositions, as well as complement the existing retail brands too.

In this role you will be the data and analytics lead, responsible for driving strategy and vision; ensuring data is at the heard of an exceptional customer experience. This will be a Big Data, Data Science function, looking at creative uses of data in supporting the success of the company's digital propositions. This can be through the application of a broad range of data science techniques including personalisation strategies, real-time decisioning, predictive modelling, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The business is genuinely unique, and offers its employees not only an amazing environment with brilliant people all around, but they dare to dream, to innovate, and shake up the status-quo to come up with things which will be just that little bit different and more meaningful for their customers.

You will be joining the business at the start of its journey, building the data strategy and capabilities from scratch, making the key decisions which help set out both the capabilities and limitations of what you and your team will be able to do. There's good backing here from the parent company which is a FTSE top 100 listed firm.

You will also have to set out hiring plans for your team and associated priorities too. Initially there will be support from a major consultancy to get things up and running, but this will be rolled off as you hire in your own people.

The broad stroke of your responsibilities will be:

  • Providing strategic direction of the function and the data capability
  • Have a clear vision and understanding of business needs and how to align the scoping of the various projects the team undertake to align to helping achieve these
  • Work with the partners and stakeholders across the business, feeding their needs for insight and ensuring the right data is at the heart of decision making
  • Provide thought leadership to the business in how data and analytics can drive innovation through supporting the build of innovative propositions
  • Define the reporting and KPI measurement frameworks across all products and services, ensuring it meets the needs of stakeholders
  • Building a team of data professionals, including the definition of a cutting edge data and analytics function, implementing the right tools and techniques to drive innovation within the business

This is a Big Data environment, and you will be working with tools like SQL, Python and R principally. The client states they don't need people to specifically have a data science pedigree, but you will need to have a solid awareness of what data science is, its merits as well as opportunities.

Being a small business unit, there is potentially the need for you to be hands-on still with some of the work. But that should quickly be removed as you appoint your team.

How the Data Team will work:

  • Providing actionable insight and analytically led solutions aligned to their digital content and publishing challenges - it's a digital business which will interact with its customer via apps
  • Building and maintaining an accurate predictive and machine learning solution for personalisation capabilities at an individual customer level
  • Make sure new digital platform releases and updates are working correctly and achieving the right objectives through understanding how changes have influenced behavioural and usage changes, constantly looking to provide key insights which help evolve the platform and improve the user experience
  • Looking at helping to solve classical CRM insight challenges - customer value, engagement measurement and analysis
  • How the programme has influenced customer behaviour, providing insights on customers aligned to their brand/products and commercial results it's helped achieve
