A unique opportunity has arisen, looking for an experienced Data Planner who's keen on taking the step to go client side and is looking for a position that offers the opportunity to put a proper data strategy at the heart of a massive consumer brand organisation, bringing a unified approach to using and working with data to multiple business areas (digital, operations, marketing, product teams, etc) which will result in a dramatic improvement to the company's ability to deliver a brilliant customer experience which in turn drives business performance.

This will be working for one of the UK's biggest telecoms and media players who are looking to bring in-house a centralised data planning capability - this won't just be siloed to marketing and CRM, but looking at the business more holistically. All areas customer data can and is used to personalise an experience, or provide an effective service.

Your first priority will be mapping these areas, identifying what's already in play, how it's used by each of these teams/channels - what could/should be shared across other channels and where the gaps are.

Work on the contact strategies, devising the contact rules. Helping to visualise data in ways which are much more meaningful to less data literate teams than just a spreadsheet.

Put in place an assessment of the needs of the business. Identify gaps in the data and how bridging that will enable better business performance and customer experience when deployed into the proper channels in the right ways. From that also identify how to bridge those gaps with 3rd party data, and once acquired, lead the change management piece to have it properly adopted and utilised by the channels it's there to support.

Your work will impact lots of different areas across what is a massive organisation. It has the potential to significantly evolve how the business talks to its customers through putting data in the right hands at the right times so customer are spoken to and communications personalised in the right ways. The result of which will be a dramatic improvement to customer experience and as a side effect, business results.

Experiences will be more personalised across all channels, service conversations more joined up, lifecycle communications more relevant and timely and product and services able to be better tailored to that customer because data is now at the centre of the business powering everything.

The business needs someone who is a do-er - this role bridges being the strategic leader and functional deliverer. It's their first hire into this space, as such needs someone who's as at home doing the hands-on data planning piece (e.g. building Excel model in how the business will use data) and also has the communication skills to articulate this to both data teams in their language whilst also working with non-technical teams like marketing stakeholders too.

You will be looking at how the business can become more agile and get better performance from their data, so some of your influence can be on looking at the basics as well as getting involved in and leading much larger projects such as building segmentations and translating them into workable marketing strategy.

Because of where these functions sit, the company is hoping to engage someone who's come from or had a good level of agency experience, working for either the big loyalty consultancies or BTL agencies. However will also be happy to consider applicants who come from large service businesses such as retail banking, utilities, telecoms or subscriptions media firms too.

Salary: Up to £75,000 base (£80k approx.. when including car allowance)

Preferable Skills and Attributes:

  • Demonstrable experience of moving the marketing perspective of a company from product focus to customer first
  • A solid background in data planning for a CRM function
  • Able to evidence how and where you've brought data plans together, unifying an approach across many channels and teams, putting data at the centre of these operations and through this, improving things like personalisation, digital experience, service experience for the customers
  • Experience working with/for a big BTL agency or one of the major loyalty agencies/consultancies
  • Or, experience working for a major consumer business like a Mobile Network, Utility business, retail financial services, etc. within their comms/data planning functions
  • A do-er, not just a high level strategist. You must be able to get down into the detail and not get stuck just looking at the bigger picture
  • Able to demonstrate where and how you've had a positive impact on a business through improving their use of data in campaigns from a comms/data planning perspective and the processes surrounding this
  • Must be able to navigate your way around a big business successfully - influencing and managing large groups of stakeholders
  • Got to be able to work with analytics functions and marketing teams, acting as the translator between these 2 business functions, so you must be able to speak each of their languages effectively
