Job Description

The Opportunity

At the core of every charity is the overriding challenge of raising funds. The British Heart Foundation is no exception. Indeed, some of the challenges it faces as the nation’s heart charity are far greater. A great deal of its investment goes into heart research an activity that can be difficult for potential supporters to understand and connect with.

To meet this challenge, the Director of Fundraising is aiming to raise the profile and to increase its relevance to its target audiences and is hiring three individuals to really help drive this strategy: Head of Volunteering, a Project Directors in charge of Supporter Acquisition and another Project Director in charge of Customer Relationship Management.


The Position

In line with the BHF vision, this is no ordinary role. This is a challenging opportunity and not for the squeamish! We are looking for someone who is currently or has historically modelled a highly innovative and original customer acquisition programme campaign. It could be that you are currently heading this function or providing strategic direction to a head of acquisition / direct marketing. Make no mistake; if you have the skills and the courage to implement change and drive marketing strategy, you should definitely be considering this opportunity.

*To significantly improve and develop the BHF approach to supporter acquisition
*To devise, develop and oversee the delivery of a step change cross-charity acquisition strategy.
*To develop, test and roll out new acquisition products, both within the Fundraising Division and across the Foundation
*To lead on a BHF operational priority – to win retain and develop support for the BHF.
*To assist with the development and implementation of the Fundraising strategy

The Person

*Track record in achieving step change results
*Strong achievement drive
*Significant experience of successful supporter/customer acquisition
*Outstanding direct marketing skills
*Excellent budgeting skills
*Target orientation
*Fundraising experience is desirable
*Outstanding ability to develop and deliver strategy
*Strong influencing and negotiating skills
*Experience of developing new business partnerships, which bring support to the organisation
*Ability to motivate others
*The ability to lead and motivate staff is essential
*Good report writing skills
*Ability to present and interpret financial information
*The ability to travel as required

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning:

*To lead colleagues to develop, and then oversee the delivery of a step change acquisition strategy
*To deliver a strategy test plan- manage, roll out and evaluate
*To adapt and finalise the strategy based upon test results
*To ensure that all FR acquisition activity is integrated and in line with the strategy
*To achieve significant improvement in results
*To work with colleagues across the Foundation to devise a plan to acquire supporters for the BHF
*To monitor all acquisition activity, report on ROI and LTV and recommend changes
*To work closely with Project Director CRM to ensure alignment of strategies
*To work with the Director of Fundraising to further develop the FR strategy

Business Development:

*To lead colleagues across Fundraising to develop and test new acquisition products, channels and media
*To work with colleagues across the Foundation to develop and test new acquisition products and channels
*To work with external partners to develop and test new acquisition products and channels
*To manage strategic partnerships with suppliers in support of acquisition strategy

Partnerships:

*To develop effective internal and external partnerships in order to significantly grow and improve BHF supporter acquisition activity
*To communicate across the organisation the progress of acquisition strategy work, winning the support of colleagues

Budgeting:

*To devise a budget for development of the acquisition strategy
*To oversee the development and roll out of all FR budgets related to acquisition
*Monitor ROI of all acquisition activity
*Establish and monitor acquisition KPIs across the Division
