Job Description

To strengthen and develop Horticultural Trade Association Marketing (HTA) and Communications initiatives on behalf of the garden industry. Main targets for activity will be the general public (promotion schemes, PR) and the industry and Association membership (promotional participation, market information, events and shows). Better marketing will enable the industry to perform better in a more challenging and competitive environment, and benefit from the creation of more demand for its products by the schemes. HTA will benefit by enhancing it’s reputation for marketing expertise, and generating additional income from participation in its schemes. The job holder will also be expected to make a major contribution to overall strategy for HTA and the garden/leisure industry, and work closely with key members of the Association.

MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB:

*Oversee the management of the operations and development of the National Garden Gift Vouchers scheme in order to capitalise on considerable further growth potential. Working with the existing Marketing and Operations teams and their external services, key objectives will include raising consumer awareness, improving point of sale presence, developing management information systems, and an e-Card offering. Current turnover is in excess of £30m per annum and there is a substantial and flexible marketing budget to support growth plans
*Oversee the provision of existing, and generation of new, market information for the industry’s use. This will include the further development of the successful diary panel-based sales data (Garden Industry Monitor), the use of regular Omnibus surveys, and the commissioning of specific ad hoc surveys on matters of commercial interest to the industry. There is also a need to assist members with the interpretation and use of various forms of market information
*Oversee the management of existing promotional schemes (e.g. NGGVs, PlantforLife), and maximise the use of external funds (Brussels, sponsors). Develop new schemes to meet Members’ needs (e.g. “Home Grown”), and generate new involvement by consumers and Income for HTA (e.g. loyalty card schemes)
*Oversee the HTA PR strategy, ensuring that communication with Members are developed further (e.g. HTA News/e-news, website, trade press) and that the garden industry itself is promoted to the gardening and wider public media
*Oversee the management and development of an ongoing programme of events (e.g. national conferences, workshops, master classes, training events) and to optimise our involvement in trade shows and sponsorship activities
*To consider potential for new marketing schemes to meet the changing needs of our membership and to generate income for the association
*To be a key member of the Senior Management team, contributing to the overall strategy of the HTA and the industry and interfacing with senior members
*Control and manage Marketing and overhead budgets, and ensuring adequate staffing and their motivation

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

*Conventional consumer/brand marketing skills, acquired in a sophisticated marketing environment
*Some specific experience in market research, promotions, PR/events would be useful
*Previous experience in the garden/horticulture industry is not essential, though some exposure to it and/or leisure industries would be desirable
*The job holder is likely to be of a graduate calibre, with fluent self presentational skills tempered with diplomatic sensitivity

BENEFITS:

Salary will be based on c. £60,000 per annum, together with a Management bonus of up to 20%, 30 days annual holiday, pension scheme, life insurance, private health cover, disability insurance scheme, annual medical screening. Car: negotiable
