Main duties and responsibilities:
·To act as a first point of contact for the news media and to respond to their calls, liaising with the team to ensure that all media enquiries received by the organisation are dealt with efficiently and on deadline.
·To take on the lead role in dealing with regional news stories and national stories, as directed by the Media Relations Manager.
·To identify and manage as many news angles for each story as possible, maximising coverage
·To act as a media spokesperson for the organisation
·To advise senior managers on written responses to controversial questions from the media, and to draft and agree these responses
·To juggle a diverse workload and decide and change priorities on an hour by hour basis, depending on the situation
·To take the lead on longer term corporate positioning projects where required, including longer term media plans and corporate event support
·To identify and research news stories, and write releases.
·To proactively find potential news stories and promote them in appropriate areas
·To build mutually beneficial relationships with key national and local journalists
·To develop and maintain schedules of forthcoming media publicity opportunities for the organisation and to follow up these leads, in conjunction with the other Media Relations Executive.
·To maintain records of media monitoring and to compile a twice weekly media monitoring report in conjunction with the other Media Relations Executive.
·To scan specified newspapers, seeking opportunities to promote the organisation to the media, identifying coverage of the organisation , and distributing information on press coverage to other staff as appropriate.
·To identify, research and write stories for the organisations in-house newsletter.
·To target and distribute news releases via e-mail using media targeting software
·To provide other administrative and practical support within the department as required from time to time.
·To provide support and advice to other departments as required on specific media relations issues.
·To play a key role in developing an understanding of and commitment to the added value and benefits of good PR practice
·To identify and organise training for broadcast experts. To promote these to the organisation's target media.
·To scan specific newspapers, seeking opportunities to promote the organisation to the media, identifying coverage of the University and distributing information on press coverage to other staff as appropriate.
