Searching for graphic design jobs? Then let us guide you through some of the requirements for the role, and also what you can expect from a graphic design job.
Graphic design is a varied and rewarding sector to work in, so it's no surprise it's one of the most popular design jobs.
What You Need
Whether you're an experienced graphic designer, or this will be your first design job, you should always be prepared to show a portfolio of your work. If you have worked in the sector before then you can show examples from your current and previous companies, and if not, you should showcase your work from university if applicable, or any personal projects.
What will also always be required is a good knowledge of key graphic design software packages - the most common being the Adobe Creative Suite. Macs are also usually the hardware of choice for designers, so familiarity with them will definitely be beneficial.
Graphic design jobs can be very varied. Some are online-based, where you will design material such as:
emails
banners
web pages
social media adverts
Others are offline-focused, where you may be designing:
point of sale material
flyers
brochures
packaging.
Experience in the area of the role you are applying to will always be beneficial - though often not necessary, especially for junior graphic design jobs. It is far more important to prove your creative flair, in whatever medium you can!
What You Can Expect
The salary of a graphic designer can be anything from £20,000 to £40,000 - depending on the seniority level and the size of the company. The middle of this range - £25k - £30k is the most common salary band.
Graphic design jobs are not without their challenges, and tight deadlines and difficult briefs are likely to be among the ones you face. But. if you're hard-working, efficient, and with good communication skills to liaise about projects, then you'll have what it takes to succeed.
Working in graphic design is very rewarding, as you are responsible for how the brand you work for is portrayed. Seeing your work in print or online is always a satisfying moment! It's also ever-changing as new developments take place - for example the move to mobile responsive web content has opened up a whole new world of graphic design challenges and opportunities.
