Overall Job Purpose

We are looking for a creative Senior Designer to work on our developing portfolio of pre-school magazines and digital content. You will be passionate about creating and designing magazine and digital content for children under 7 and you will have proven knowledge of the pre-school market.

Working as part of an editorial team, you will be responsible for creating lively and imaginative layouts for a wide range of pre-school titles.

The ability to design great magazines for the pre-school market is essential.
You will be expected to design compilation and single-branded titles following set style guides, whilst meeting the needs of the pre-school audience and their parents.

Working across a variety of magazines and formats you will be expected to design and lay out pages, covermounts and marketing material. The ability to prioritise your workload to ensure that deadlines are met is essential. You will ensure designs are fresh, appealing and appropriate to the target age-group while accurately complying with the set style of each magazine. You will develop and set styles for new launches and relaunches as required.

You will be expected to work closely with the marketing and buying teams
to design and develop magazine covermounts, stickers and marketing material.

Fully competent in the use of Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator is absolutely essential.

The successful applicant will have a background in magazine design, ideally for children’s titles.

Accountabilities

* To fully deputise for the Art Editor in their absence, making all decisions concerning the magazine and app content ie, appropriate editorial content and design style.
* To contribute high quality design ideas for our pre-school apps and to design content that is exciting and rich with learning opportunities for children.
* To work closely with the editorial and development teams ensuring that app deadlines are met.
* To manage the design of several pre-school magazine titles, prioritising and multi-tasking, ensuring deadlines are met.
* To liase with production, rights holders, external contacts as well as members of the editorial, marketing and buying teams to ensure that deadlines are met.
* Design content using Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop with attention to appropriate layouts, picture usage and colour ensuring designs accurately comply with the style sheet and maintain the look of the title.
* Contribute ideas and designs for pitches and new launches.
* Contribute ideas and new designs for existing print and digital content.
* Final check the layouts and sign off PDF pages in Dialogue system.
* Ensure the correct usage of fonts, colours and images.
* Ensure that digital images are stored in good order.
* Attend meetings with rights holders, ensuring a good, positive working relationship with them and a good outcome for all.
* Attend flatplanning and other meetings to discuss content and form of issues.
* Attend meetings with other art teams and the editorial team as a whole to discuss overall design of children’s titles and competitors.
* Attend photoshoots and meetings. Source or make props for photoshoots when needed.
* Attend covermount meetings, come up with ideas that will work for our magazines, collaborate with buying and production.
* Carry out picture research, if required, following picture research best practice guidelines, including use of the ECS (electronic commissioning system).
* Promote the use of DAM where possible for all initial picture research, followed by preferred picture agencies where BBC Magazines has negotiated favourable group rates.
* Commission artwork for pages and liaise directly with illustrators to make sure commission is delivered by set deadline and to standard required.
* To manage freelance designers when needed.

Knowledge, Experience & Competencies

* Fully competent in the use of Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
* Experience of designing magazines is essential.Experience of designing magazines for children under 7 is desirable.
* Experience of creating and designing ideas for children’s apps is desirable.
* Good understanding of our readers, how they use children’s magazines in print and digital formats and how they learn is essential.
* Must be familiar with the Early Years Curriculum.
* Knowledge of CBeebies content is essential.
* Ability to contribute ideas, communicate and support team environment.
* Ability to foster a positive working environment taking all stakeholders into account.
* Organisational skills are a must for this position.
* Ability to prioritise work according to tight deadlines. Familiarity with Immediate Media Co’s DAM system and understanding of picture copyright issues would be an advantage.
* A basic understanding of ICC colour management and the use of ICC profiles would be an advantage.
* The senior designer must possess creative ability and be self-motivated to work independently.
* A demonstrable interest in the editorial content of pre-school magazines.
* An appreciation of the BBC brand and values.
* Experience of maintaining and monitoring budgets is desirable.
