Job Summary & Purpose

We are looking for a Staff Writer to create high quality editorial for our leading knowledge magazine How it Works and its website. As Staff Writer you’ll write accurate, lively and accessible content that is enjoyable to read across How It Works’ print and digital platforms. You’ll research and learn about new subjects quickly and be able to speak about them in an authoritative tone. You’ll conduct interviews with scientists, engineers and researchers, and establish good relationships with scientific bodies, book publishers and PR contacts to enable you to produce high quality editorial. Working closely with the editor and editor-in-chief, you’ll generate and develop content ideas and angles as well as craft ideas for design treatments and boxouts. You’ll assist with the magazine’s social media presence and contribute copy, ideas and assistance across all of Future’s science coverage.

You will either be a graduate with some experience of writing in either science, technology or have relevant work related experience. You should have a positive, can-do attitude and be an individual who doesn’t just have enthusiasm for science but also a passion in communicating it to a wide audience. Curious about the world around you, you are keen on getting into the details of ‘how things work’.

Key role responsibilities

You’ll have a genuine passion for science and have a qualification in a scientific field, journalism or an equivalent discipline. You’ll have a proven talent of writing quick, accurate and entertaining copy. With the ability to research stories, finding interesting and unique angles, you’ll also have a willingness to build a working relationship within the fields of science and technology. You’ll have strong organisation and time management skills and will be able to work on your own initiative to deadlines. You’ll ideally have experience of using social media and CMS. Travel to press events both inside and outside of the United Kingdom may be required.

How to Apply

If you are looking to combine your passion for science and journalism we would love to hear from you. To apply please submit your CV and a covering letter telling us why you would be suited to this role.
