Space.com’s Staff Writer write daily news stories, features and multimedia.

Overall job description:

Space.com is looking for a well-informed, sharp and hardworking staff writer with the right stuff to cover the latest astronomy discoveries, skywatching events and space launches and missions.

This person should be a space news junkie, with a keen eye for spotting which news items, discoveries, images or videos speak to a Space.com reader.

The Staff Writer will oversee Space.com’s Image of the Day, write daily stories on tight deadlines, travel for science conferences and launch/mission coverage and work with colleagues to make thoughtful decisions on whether and how to cover breaking news. This person will also work to share the space news experience with readers as warranted through social media, video and other outlets.

The Staff Writer should be enthusiastically curious, have terrific organizational skills, an enthusiasm for space science and exploration, as well as work well on a team with other editors and reporters.

Key role responsibilities:

* Write at least two stories/feature or slideshows per day.

* Find, report and edit short news quickhits and longer science features.

* Travel to science conferences, events and mission launches as news requires.

* Ensure the Space.com’s skywatching section is up to date and covering daily and monthly events.

* Work with editorial team to strategize for short and long-term coverage planning.

Essential skills and experience:

* 1-2 years writing in a news or science writing environment.

* Superb organizational skills

* Strong editing, writing and communication skills

* Familiarity with social media and video streaming (Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, etc.) for live onscene coverage

* A passion for space

* Journalism degree preferred

* Knowledge of SEO online best practices and science background a plus
